As part of the non-profit Blueprints For Learning, the Community Building Children’s Center is committed to supporting young children, their families, and the staff who care for and educate them through the development of environments that foster friendship, curiosity, self-esteem and joy. Our goal is to create a strong community of learning and mutual support. We believe in the amazing capacity of each child: their imagination, intelligence, and capability. We believe that when children are surrounded by loving, nurturing, and joyful family members and teachers it creates a foundation for peaceful, generative lives. We believe in the unity of the human family and in caring for the earth, our home. We open our doors, hearts, and minds to all who are willing to embrace this journey with us. By doing so, we create a community of compassionate people with children at its center.

Program Description

The Community Building Children’s Center (CBCC) was established in 2002 by Community Building redeveloper, Jim Sheehan, and Early Childhood Educator, Lynne Sanders, with the goal of creating an accessible, high-quality childcare child care program designed to serve the families working in the Community Building. Anita Morgan succeeded Lynne as CBCC Program Director as well as Executive Director of Blueprints for Learning with an impressive 15 year tenure (2004-2019).  Anita retired from the organization in January of 2020 and is succeeded by Crystal MaCurdy as Executive Director and Senior Program Director (2022-Current).

The Community Building Children's Center is a Reggio Inspired early care and education program, licensed through the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF). CBCC has a licensed capacity of 29 children. The program is a voluntary participant in Early Achievers, Washington State’s Quality Rating and Improvement System for child care programs. CBCC received a level 4 Rating (level 4/5) in 2014 and 2017. We are currently in the process of obtaining our third rating which will be completed in 2025.

CBCC is a full-day, full-year program that is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. Our Toddler Classroom serves up to nine children ages 12 to 36 months. The preschool classroom serves up to 20 children 3-5 years of age. Although we give the families of individuals who work in the Community and Saranac buildings priority enrollment, the program is open to the general Spokane community when space is available.

We are an income-inclusive program and enroll families who receive Working Connections Childcare (WCCC) as space is available.

Research-Based Music Program

We offer the Music Together® curriculum to all students enrolled in the program. Music Together is an internationally recognized, research-based, developmentally appropriate music curriculum designed for children ages 0-7 and their teachers and families.

As part of the Music Together® curriculum, Music Together specialists teach weekly music and movement classes in early learning settings in cooperation with classroom teachers. Classroom teachers then follow through on the weekly sessions, adapting activities to their curriculum needs and interests. Recordings, songbooks, and teaching materials are provided to each classroom and family. Children “bring the music home” for parent-child music play, sharing the songs and activities learned in school.

The Music Together curriculum provides children with the opportunity to learn music in developmentally appropriate ways; supports their language, cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development; enhances the classroom experience; supports family engagement by giving parents enjoyable and significant ways to nurture their children’s development; and enhances happiness and well-being in the school community.

High Quality Child Assessments

CBCC uses Teaching Strategies GOLD, an observation-based assessment system,  to help teachers gather important information about your child's interests and skills. These assessments additionally help facilitate the transition from the preschool environment into the K-12 environment for all children enrolled in our program.

The first 5 years of your child’s life are very important. Your child’s healthy social-emotional development forms a foundation for lifelong learning. ASQ:SE-2 is a set of questionnaires about behavior and social-emotional development in young children. There are nine questionnaires for different ages to screen children from 1 month to 6 years old. ASQ:SE has been used by parents for more than 15 years. It makes sure that children’s socialemotional development is on schedule. It helps you celebrate milestones while addressing any concerns as early as possible. ASQ:SE-2 can help identify your child’s social-emotional strengths and areas where your child may need support.
